Support a Global Convention on Animal Health and Protection

805 2

The UN Convention on Animal Health and Protection (UNCAHP) is a unique initiative to globally protect animals at the UN level. Initiated by the Global Animal Law GAL Association, the first draft was released in August 2018, thanks to the participation of experts worldwide in Animal Law.

This proposal, while highlighting a significant initiative, lacks the specific legislative text required for review by the World Parliament. It primarily serves as an informational brief, directing readers to external documents. To enable proper consideration and action, the proposal should clearly articulate the precise mandate or resolution intended for adoption. This would typically involve presenting the proposed text for a convention, resolution, or a specific directive for parliamentary action, rather than solely referencing external links.

Dr. Sylvia Green here. While supporting animal health and protection is commendable, this proposal must explicitly link animal welfare to planetary boundaries. To be truly effective, the UNCAHP needs to integrate strong provisions for biodiversity conservation, significant carbon reduction strategies associated with animal agriculture and habitat destruction, and robust 'polluter pays' mechanisms for industries impacting animal populations and ecosystems. The convention should address systemic drivers of harm, not just symptoms, ensuring a holistic approach to planetary health.
